Hello cake lovers

My name is Lauren and I’m the artist behind Butter & Bodoni, a bespoke cake studio based in Edinburgh, Scotland. In my studio I create beautifully bespoke cakes for couples in love, just like you! Weddings are my passion. Nothing brings me more joy than working with you to create a sugary masterpiece to mark your once-in-a-lifetime moment. For me, there really is no better way to celebrate than with cake.

Butter & Bodoni is the lovechild of two of my lifelong passions — art and design and delicious baked goods. Before I entered the world of cake I was a graphic designer for over 10 years, working in both Toronto, Canada (my home country) and Edinburgh, Scotland. In my career as a designer, I cultivated a strong design aesthetic and honed my skills for composition, balance, and colour. During those busy and colourful years, I had the pleasure of working with some amazing studios full of incredibly talented designers — even winning some awards for myself along the way. Art and design has always been my home — a place where I can truly express myself and take joy in creating a more beautiful and colourful world. I loved my career as a graphic designer and I still obsess over fonts and paper stocks, but I always felt that something was missing.

Baking has always been a huge part of my life. I have such fond memories of baking with my Grandma in her kitchen. Of sitting on the countertop waiting patiently for her to give me the bowl and spoon to lick after she’d poured the batter into the tin. She was the one that taught me that food could be a love language. You could never leave her house without a tray of muffins or at least a tin of cookies and when she came to visit she always had something in her arms to give you.

I’ve always loved making cakes for parties and family events and I was always known in the studios where I worked as someone who regularly brought in homemade treats. The more cakes I created and the more skills I learned the more I was drawn to the sugary side of life. After many years of baking cakes late at night and working all day I was coming to a crossroads and had to do a bit of soul searching. I knew I wanted to pursue cake design so I decided to go back to school. In 2014 I graduated from the Bonnie Gordon School of Confectionary Arts with an honours diploma in Cake Design and my life as a cake artist truly began.

I have been so incredibly lucky to have worked in the wedding industry for over 6 years, on both the graphic design side and the cake design side of the industry. As a graphic designer, I was a part of the incredibly talented team at WedLuxe, a luxury wedding media brand based in Toronto, Canada. Being a part of the wonderfully creative WedLuxe team was a true highlight for me and lit the fire for my burgeoning career in the wedding industry. Working at WedLuxe made me realise just how much I loved the wedding industry!

It was at this time that I was yearning to move back to Scotland, where I had lived a few years prior. So in 2017, knowing that I could make my mark in Edinburgh with my unique style, I made the decision with my husband to move back to Scotland and begin my life as a full-time cake designer.

Butter & Bodoni is the culmination of all of my experiences and creative endeavours. My lifelong journey through art, design and cake making has led me to create a brand that encompasses all three in perfect harmony. My passion is creating bespoke, design-driven cakes for modern, creative couples. For people just like you!

What is Bodoni?

Bodoni is one of my favourite fonts and references my roots as a graphic designer. I am and always have been utterly obsessed with typography. Have I watched Helvetica at least a hundred times? Do I own a 648 page book dedicated to the love of Fraktur fonts? Does the sight of perfectly kerned letterforms bestill my beating heart? Hell yes to all of the above!
